Undergraduates and Summer Programs
The University of Minnesota hosts a number of great programs to get students involved in research.
For current UMN undergraduates, please check out these opportunities through the College of Biological Sciences (CBS) link.
FAQs
How would visa status impact my hiring as a postdoc?
Having a J-1 or H1-B visa (or similar mechanism) is necessary for postdoctoral fellows from abroad to work in the laboratory. A lack of visa status at the time of application is not exclusionary, but will require extra planning and consideration.
On undergraduate opportunities and pay:
We have limited availability for undergraduate training (1-2 slots) on a rolling basis. Preference is given to undergraduates who apply early (freshman or sophomore year) and can be available around 8-12 hours a week during the academic year. Undergraduates would need to be volunteers for one semester as they receive training. Thereafter, undergraduates performing lab tasks (not shadowing) could be paid hourly at UMN rates (currently, $15.25/hr).
If you’d like to be on a non-volunteer status in the first semester, undergraduates are encouraged to apply for the 1-semester paid undergraduate research opportunity, provided through CBS (link above). In addition, targeting this opportunity towards the summer provides an ideal period for training.
What benefits are provided to Students and Employees at UMN?
Benefits differ by job category. Postdoctoral fellows and full-time research technicians are considered University employees and receive many of the outlined benefits (link). Graduate students have student benefits outlined here.
